Skibstedgaard is known in history all the way back to the Vikings, where Skibsted Fjord  and the surronding area was an important area brimming with activity. Archeologists have recently discovered the foundation of a very large building or part of a fortress just behind the main building of Skibstedgaard.

The main building dating from the mid 18th century

In 1085 Knud the Holy gathered a huge fleet with 1000 Danish and 60 Norwegian ships. Historical sources tells us, that this fleet gathered in Skibsted Fjord - wating for a storm out, but due to troubles in the Southern parts of Denmark. The fleet never left, and this aborted raid is remenbered as the end of the age of the Vikings.
